The Gift of the Magi
A young couple learns that it is truly better to give than to receive in O’Henry’s beloved holiday chestnut, The Gift of the Magi. Set in tiny New York tenement flat on Christmas Eve in 1905, the story centers upon Jim, whose sole prized possession is a shiny gold inherited watch, and Della, who takes pride in her long, flowing hair. Strapped for cash, but desperate to find gifts for each other, the couple makes a selfless sacrifice in the famous finale in which [Spoiler Alert] Jim sells his shiny watch to buy Della combs for her hair, not knowing that Della has sold her hair to buy Jim a chain for that watch. Dreamhouse Theatre’s production of this famous fable is designed to fill families with yuletide cheer, and enhances O’Henry’s short story with new music and lyrics by composer Peter Ekstrom.
