The life of a snowflake starts with delicate, atmospheric crystal formation and ends with sudden mangling beneath the snowboards of teenagers. Frolic in nature's snowy beauty with today's Groupon: for $20, you get two all-day adult lift tickets at Highlands of Olympia in Oconomowoc (up to a $40 value).

Just a half-hour jaunt from downtown Milwaukee, Highlands of Olympia raises skiers and boarders up the slope for glissades down its five runs. An online condition tracker and resort schedule helps trippers plan ski daytrips from their homes or hollowed-out sequoias, and each ride on the lift brings another view of the beautiful, tree-lined slope surrounded by a seemingly endless forest. Neophyte snow gliders may rent equipment upon arrival, and a bar and restaurant caters to people who have worked up their appetite during impromptu training montages. Visitors can also show off grinds, grabs, and jumps in Olympia's terrain parks, which rotate in new challenges each season, including changing kink rails, natural features, culverts, and bonks.

Highlands of Olympia's rates fluctuate throughout the week.

Highlands of Olympia

Five trails descend down the slopes at Highlands of Olympia, ranging from the beginner-friendly bunny hill to the East Bowl, a black diamond that challenges advanced skiers to face the biting winds as they carve through the incline. The mountain also features a terrain park where snowboarders grind over rails and boxes, and tow ropes pull inner tubes up the hill before they are released for a speedy 1,000-foot-long descent that covers a 60-foot vertical drop. A half-hour’s drive from downtown Milwaukee, Highlands packs a day’s worth of entertainment into the neatly packed snow, from the onsite bar and restaurant to lessons in which instructors impart the secrets of picking up ham-radio signals with outstretched ski poles.
