Presented by the American Association of Zoo Keepers, the second annual Comedy Night At The Oregon Zoo raises money for a two animal-focused causes. The Ruaha Carnivore Project supports large carnivores in Tanzania’s remote Ruaha landscape, while the Audubon Society of Portland focuses on the city’s birds and other native wildlife.
Between nibbling on hors d’oeuvres and sipping cocktails, guests can bid in live and silent auctions. Prizes range from a Bianchi Volpe bicycle to a beach-house getaway on the Oregon Coast to a chance to get up close and personal with the zoo’s animals. Daria O’Neill of 105.1 “The Buzz” returns as the event’s hostess, and MC’s a comedy line-up that includes Portland-based stand-up comics Alex Falcone and Bri Pruett.
Earth's vast diversity of life is on full display inside the Oregon Zoo, whose 64 acres give a home to 232 animal species (and about 2,000 individual animals)—including 22 endangered species and 37 threatened species. A walk across the grounds can take visitors into five distinct exhibit areas: Great Northwest, Fragile Forests, Asia, Pacific Shores and Africa. Each one splits into specialized exhibits, including the cheetahs of the Serengeti; the Colobus monkey of the African Rainforest; and the elephants of Asia, famous for never forgetting the capital of Bangladesh.
Animals aren't the only attraction at Oregon Zoo, however. Over 1,000 species of exotic plants create a vibrant, living backdrop. The zoo also hosts special events including behind the scenes tours, summer animal shows, and a summer concert series in which humans demonstrate the one and only thing that separates them from the animals—shredding on a guitar.
