Experiencing a brewery tour is a great way to learn about beer making and tickle hops until they weep tears of pale-ale joy. Expand your fermented horizons with today's Groupon: for $30, you get one ticket to a pedicab brewery tour from Pdx Pedicab (a $65 value).
Pdx Pedicab has the world on a bike chain with tours of downtown Portland's local breweries conducted by knowledgeable cyclist-guides. Guests can nestle inside the fully covered bike cab for a tour, lasting two–three hours, of three local breweries. During the leisurely journey, guides regale their customers with the history of each brewery, what's on tap, and whether hops are available for horse feed that day. Brewery visits may include Rogue Brewery, whose popular deep-red Captain Sig's Northwestern Ale flits from floral to malty in one swig, Bridgeport Brewing Co. with an on-site brewpub and a cascade of craft beers, and either Tugboat Brewing Company or Lucky Labrador Brewing Company. Guests spend 45 minutes at each brewery, quaffing ice-cold beers and wheedling the occasional brewery into a tour of its brew room or storage unit full of confiscated sports cars.
Pedicab brewery tours are regularly scheduled on Tuesday and Thursday, but tours may be booked outside of those days by phone. More tour dates are added to the calendar each month. Though most tastings are included in the price of this Groupon, one brewery charges an additional $3 for tastings. Pickup locations vary, but are always located in downtown Portland.
Groupon is donating $1 from every Portland deal sold on Portland Beer Day to the Glen Hay Falconer Foundation's scholarship fund; up to $2,000 will be donated. Named for the late brewer Glen Hay, the foundation provides area brewers with opportunities to further their craft. In 2011, it is offering educational scholarships to the World Brewing Academy at the Siebel Institute and to the American Brewers Guild.
Stalwart cyclists pedal through Portland's historic streets, towing colorful chariots with up to three passengers seated snugly on their padded benches. Pdx Pedicab's drivers take participants on guided experiences of local breweries, such as Bridgeport, Tugboat, and Rogue, during jaunts through Distillery Row, the East Side, and the Pearl District. They also venture out to wine cellars during voyages throughout the southeast part of the city. They make stops at each selected establishment, where passengers sip samples and purchase additional drinks to recover from joining obligatory fire-breathing competitions. Drivers also conduct cycle-powered experiences starting from the west bank of the Willamette River to explore the city's eclectic culture and some of its stranger landmarks. Each eco-friendly, emissions-free pedicab is open-air, allowing riders to feel summer or autumnal winds in their hair during excursions.
