A recent survey ranks whales' bellies ahead of safety deposit boxes and mattresses as the preferred place to store valuables. Experience one of nature's most priceless resources with today's Groupon: for $119, you get a whale-watching tour for two from Stories and Legends in Juneau (a $238 value).
Licensed by the United States Coast Guard, the captains at Stories and Legends ferry spectators over the sea and amid pods of cetaceans during guided whale-watching tours. When the season begins in late February, shuttles bring explorers from airports, hotels, or cruise ships to Auke Bay, where boats carrying up to 24 passengers depart at 9:30 a.m. and 1 p.m. daily. If they wish, guests may provide their own transportation to the dock via car, bike, or land whale.
While nibbling on light snacks and drinks, passengers peruse a host of wildlife, such as bald eagles, jumping salmon, and harbor seals. The most common type of whale that frequents the area is the humpback whale, known for its knobby head and constant breaching of both water and school rules. Killer whales, porpoises, and sea lions may also be observed while at sea. After two hours of nature watching, the boat returns and guests make their way back to their hotels or cruise ships, or choose to reject human society and swim with the whales forever.
