The NYC tour is offered daily from 3 p.m. to 9 p.m. (magic hour time changes throughout the year); the piloting experience is offered daily between 8 a.m. and 2 p.m. (last appointment time is at 1 p.m.); and the fall foliage tour runs daily from 3 pm. to sundown.
Sightseers start their tour at Westchester County Airport, where their whirlybird will take off before swooping over to New York City. The tour, which Westchester Magazine recently highlighted as a creative date idea, grants passengers stunning aerial views of Central Park, Yankee Stadium, the Manhattan skyline, and the East River bridges, all of which are all the more striking set against a colorful sunset. The tour also highlights Westchester landmarks, including the nearby Rockefeller Estate of Kykuit and the Hudson Palisades. The 30-minute tour does not reach the Downtown Manhattan/Statue of Liberty area. Please contact Wings Air Helicopters to extend the tour to 45 minutes to see Lower Manhattan and Lady Liberty for an additional fee. Wings Air’s helicopters seat up to six passengers. Children younger than 2 years old may fly at no cost if they can safely fit on one of their parent’s laps. A minimum of two passengers per tour is required. These tours are not private and passengers may be paired with other people.
During the private-pilot experience, a piloting instructor first teaches the student basic flight controls, flying techniques, and safety procedures in a training session that takes place on the ground. After taking off, the instructor hands over control of the helicopter, letting students soar over Westchester County, the Hudson River, and the coastlines of Hudson Valley, New York and Connecticut, all the while enjoying views of the Manhattan skyline in the distance. Lessons are not permitted in New York City airspace due to regulations. Private lessons allow one student to fly the helicopter and one guest passenger to ride along. 60-minute experiences consist of ground school and approximately 30 minutes in the air. For an additional fee customers may purchase a DVD of their flight footage, filmed by an on-craft Go Pro camera.
The fall foliage tour offers passengers a unique view of the vibrant color changes taking place on the trees below. The helicopter departs from the Westchester Airport and flies over various historic landmarks including Kykuit, Tappan Zee Bridge, Indian Point, Bear Mountain and West Point.
