Auburn Automobile Company ceased production in 1936, but it still houses a showroom full of classic cars with enough polished chrome and Jazz Age to charm a quarter from a tollbooth. That’s because the auto manufacturer’s headquarters is now home to the Auburn Cord Duesenberg Automobile Museum. Size: At any given time, the collection features about 120 cars, ranging from early, buggy-like models of the 1890s to those made in the 21st century. Historic significance: The museum’s structure is just as impressive as its collection. Originally commissioned by E.L. Cord himself to serve as headquarters for designers, engineers, and executives, the art-deco building became a National Historic Landmark in 2005. Special-interest automobiles: In addition to classic, antique, and vintage cars made by Auburn and Cord, the museum spotlights Indiana-manufactured vehicles. Artifacts of the road: The car collection is joined by artifacts such as drafting tools, engineer materials, and shop uniforms from the era, which provide a dynamic view of the auto industry’s evolution.
