The Issue: Risk of Injury from Falling for Seniors
One in three adults aged 65 and older falls each year. Falls often occur on stairs or in the bathroom, and these preventable accidents put seniors at risk of injury and death. Providing seniors with durable health equipment can offer them greater stability and mitigate the risk of falls. Shower chairs in particular reduce the risk of falling during this everyday activity, but even the moderate price makes this equipment an unattainable luxury for low-income seniors.
The Campaign: Distributing Shower Chairs to Seniors
All donations to this Grassroots campaign will be used by AGE of Central Texas to provide durable medical equipment to area seniors. For every $25 raised, the organization can purchase a basic shower chair for a local senior to help prevent falls and injuries in the shower. These shower chairs will give older adults the ability to shower independently and safely. The organization hopes to purchase enough chairs to erase its current waiting list—approximately 30 people—and provide chairs for new clients who request them. In 2013, AGE of Central Texas distributed 160 shower chairs in the Central Texas area and beyond.
AGE of Central Texas
AGE of Central Texas confronts the challenges of aging to improve the quality of life for seniors. It sponsors a variety of programs, including Adult Day Centers, support resources for caregivers, and computer classes for seniors. For clients facing memory loss, the organization runs an early-intervention program to help them cope with the challenges dementia will bring. The organization also distributes health equipment such as wheelchairs, walkers, and shower chairs to enhance mobility for people of all ages.
