The Issue: Schoolchildren Living with Hunger
In 2012, the Anchorage School District reported that more than 18,000 students were living in poverty and were at high risk for hunger. Proper nutrition not only helps young children grow—it keeps them focused on their studies instead of growling stomachs. Fulfilling this basic need is vital for children's development, education, and health.
The Campaign: Providing Kitchen Supplies to Prepare Food for Kids
All donations to this Grassroots campaign will be used by Bean’s Café to benefit the Children's Lunchbox, a program that serves more than 300,000 hot meals every year to more than 2,600 hungry kids. With the first $670 raised, Bean's Cafe can purchase a new set of knives, bun pans, a cooking pan, and measuring cups. Each additional $10 raised will go toward purchasing other kitchen supplies for the Children's Lunchbox kitchen. Bean's Cafe plans to use these tools to help develop two new community sites to serve food to kids throughout Anchorage in the next year. Denali Alaskan Federal Credit Union will match donations up to $500.
Based in and supported by the community since 1979, Bean’s Café serves hot breakfast and lunch 365 days a year to those experiencing homelessness as well as low-income elderly residents and seasonally unemployed community members. On the busiest days, the staff of volunteers serves almost 800 free meals. Additionally, the organization's Children’s Lunchbox program provides meals to low-income youth at sites throughout the Anchorage area. The center also provides assistance and referrals for clients seeking employment, housing, rehabilitation services, and educational opportunities, as well as long-term assistance for veterans and those with disabilities.
