We had a very interesting and informational time. The people there are very knowledgeable and passionate. My 14 year old grandson was not wanting to go. After, he said he really enjoyed the tour.

The guides were very informative. The wolves were active. After the tour, we were hanging around outside and what sounded like a dog started howling and barking. The workers were concerned that a dog had entered the property. It turned out to be a very vocal wolf who was not happy with one of the workers and was given them a piece of his mind. I had no idea that wolves actually barked. Great day.

The CA Wolf Center is a great family outing from San Diego! The presenters are knowledgeable and engaging and it's neat to see the facilities and hear about all of the efforts to restore wolfs to habitats where they once flourished. I would highly recommend this activity for grade-school children--and even adults, as I had a great time myself! We also made a quick pie-stop in Julian on the way home, which is a nice bonus ;)

About California Wolf Center

"The haunting melody of a howling wolf pack is heard in only a handful of states, as wolves have been exterminated from a vast majority of their original range," explains the California Wolf Center's website. Though these howling cries are harder to find than they once were, one place to witness their grandeur is at the California Wolf Center.

The non-profit was founded in 1977 to educate the public about wildlife and ecology, specifically the history and behavior of the gray wolf. Located 50 miles east of San Diego, it houses two subspecies of wolves: the Rocky Mountain gray wolf and the endangered Mexican gray wolf. The center also participates in the Mexican Wolf Species Survival Plan, which aims to help the endangered species recover in the wild. At the facility, wolves live in enclosures that can help retain their natural behavior, as some of them will eventually be released back into the wild.
