Común Kitchen & Tavern remains only loosely tethered to a sense of place. Baja California, Mexico's ingredients, flavors, and culinary traditions serve as chef Chad White's starting point. From there, creativity trumps convention as he forges imaginative, contemporary renditions of classic dishes, which earned him the title of San Diego's Chef of the Year from Eater. The resulting menus always showcase Baja Californian roots, albeit with eclectic flair.
Chefs browse the city's docks and farmers' markets each morning, allowing the freshest ingredients available to dictate the menu's selections. Dishes can range from the familiar—zesty ceviche tostadas with avocado to temper the piquant jalapeño and chili oil—to more creative options, such as a pot of clams, smoked mahi-mahi, hominy, and red onion steamed in an aromatic broth made with Mexican beer and chorizo jus.
Común Kitchen & Tavern's decor is a blend of natural and industrial elements. With its brushed metal, concrete, brick, and reclaimed woodwork, the space creates a distinctively modern ambiance. Contributing to this modern vibe are the open kitchen, large surrealistic wall pieces by a local artist, and a self-serve draft station with LED screens above the taps that describe each craft beer.
