Highlights

Award winning plein air artist Sharon Weaver, will show you the skills needed to transport the beauty of nature into an original landscape painting. Learn to create atmosphere in your work specific to landscape painting that brings them to life!

All levels ok.

Have you wanted to paint the majesty of nature but where not sure where to start. This class will teach you how to capture the splendor of nature as we deconstruct the different elements of the landscape.

Learn how to paint a strong landscape by first picking a great photo reference. Understand the importance of composition as the foundation of your painting. The class will then follow the process of painting a landscape using simple shapes, mixing natural colors and understanding values to create atmosphere and distance in the landscape.

Students will learn how to compose a successful painting with harmony, interest and drama. Learn about the fundamentals of composition and how to include a focal point in your painting.

Students will also learn how to create atmosphere specific to landscape painting. Learn to design your paintings, not just copy a photograph. You will gain the skills needed to transport the beauty of nature into an original landscape painting.

Each student will work at their own pace from photo references with at least one completed painting at the end of the class.

You must bring your Own Materials.

Important Notes:

  • No Turpentine is allowed in the studios because of the Fumes (odorless is okay)
  • Please have everything ready to go on the first day of class
  • The School does not sell any supplies. Most of the stores in the Area will give discounts to Kline Academy of Fine Art Students.

Note from the Instructor:
Think lightweight and portable for supplies for this class and find creative ways to simplify. I try to pack everything below in a backpack, but depending on the accessibility of the site, I sometimes prefer to use a caddy with wheels. I get most of my supplies online.

Pallet
Wood or disposable paper pallet works well. My easel has a built in palette and yours may too.

Brushes
Assortment of bristle brushes (I suggest large #10 or #12, medium #6 or #8 and small #2 or #4 in Flats, Filberts or Round)

Canvas
Canvas or linen mounted on board or gessoed wood panel (sizes can range from 6x6 to 11x14). Don’t use a stretched canvas. Sunlight can go through the back and distort colors and values.

Paints
I recommend a minimal palette of a warm and cool version of the three primaries plus white (with maybe a few extras) Student grade is cheaper but contains less pigment so the colors are chalky. If you can, spend the extra for professional grade paints. I use Winsor & Newton, Gamblin, and Holbein and there are many other good options.
  • Titanium White
  • Cad Yellow
  • Yellow Ochre
  • Alizarin Crimson
  • Cadmium Red
  • Ultramarine Blue
  • Cobalt Blue
  • Burnt Sienna
Optional colors
  • Cadmium orange
  • Sap green

Other supplies
  • Images to work from (Magazines, pictures taken by you etc...)
  • Trowel type Pallet knife
  • Odorless turpentine with container or medium glass jar
  • Paper towels
  • Sketching pencil, eraser and sketchbook
Optional
  • Rubber gloves
  • Wheeled caddy for supplies
  • Wet painting carrier
  • Water / Lunch
