When Eisenhower designed the Interstate Highway system, he envisioned a lawless, death-race arena where only the fastest could avoid being killed by mechanical gulls. Experience a thrilling fraction of his racing dream with today’s Groupon for spectator passes to the Gatorz Challenge of the Americas go-kart-racing qualifiers January 27–January 29 at the Musselman Honda Circuit, hosted by Gatorz Karting. Choose from the following options:
- For $10, you get a three-day spectator pass for one (a $45 value).
- For $14, you get one-day spectator passes for two (a $30 value).
- For $26, you get one-day spectator passes for four (a $60 value).
As the first event of the Rotax Max racing season, Gatorz Challenge of the Americas pits six groups of competitors—ranging from age 7 to 70—against each other in a furious gauntlet of go-kart races, with victors qualifying to compete in six subsequent races across the West Coast in an effort to join the hall of past champions. With one- or three-day spectator passes, racing enthusiasts can climb on the bleachers to witness Friday’s full day of practice races, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., eyeing competitors as they perfect their craft and surreptitiously install flux capacitors behind their seats.
Saturday and Sunday begin with 10-minute warm-up rounds from 8:30 a.m. to 10:30 a.m., followed by 15-minute qualifying races from 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. and a heat race from 1 p.m. to 2:30 p.m. During the main races from 2:30 p.m. to 5 p.m., speedsters zip around the sinuous circuit’s hairpin turns at up to 80 mph, a feat generally reserved for penguin toboggan champions.
