First recipient of the Kennedy Center Honors Award. Cofounder of the New York City Ballet. Choreographer of more than 400 dances. These are just a few of the accomplishments of George Balanchine, one of the most recognized and celebrated figures in the world of ballet. This Fall, the Carolina Ballet stages a send-up of some of Balanchine’s most well-known pieces. Apollo follows the titular god of music and his three muses as they leap, twirl, and build a spaceship with their toes, and the Agon pas de deux touts Balanchine’s signature blend of past and present dance forms. Set to the twinkling waltzes of Russia’s first national composer, Mikhail Glinka, Valse-Fantaisie showcases ballerinas engaged in a perpetual, mesmerizing orbit.

Who Cares was Balanchine’s tribute to close friend George Gershwin. Lassoing 17 pieces from Gershwin’s songbook, Balanchine created an homage to the 1930s in what Miami City Ballet’s Artistic Director Edward Villella describes as “all-American culture combined with the structure of 19th-century Russian classical style” and praises it for “having the freshness of an eternal martini.”
