Don’t Hug Me
On the coldest day of the year, four residents of Bunyan Bay, Minnesota, are hunkered down in a rustic north-woods bar. The bar’s owner, a grump by the name of Gunner Johnson, is fed up with the cold and wants to move to Florida. But his wife, a former Winter Carnival Queen, is perfectly happy where she’s at. The waitress understands where Gunner is coming from, though—she dreams of leaving town to pursue a career in showbiz. But her fiancé, like the owner’s wife, wants to stay put. Enter a slick salesman who claims karaoke will solve all of their problems, mix in a lot of surnames ending in -sen and -son, and watch the barbs and musical notes fly.
The result: “A quirky, charming musical!” according to Joel Zwick, the director of My Big Fat Greek Wedding. And he’s not the only one who thinks so. Thanks to tongue-in-cheek songs including “I’m a Walleye Woman in a Crappie Town” and “The Bunyan Yodel,” others are smitten as well. Los Angeles Times calls it “a hokey-jokey karaoke crowd pleaser,” and the NW Region Ohio Community Theatre Association Awards bestowed eight titles upon it, including Best Director and Best Ensemble Cast.
