In the Heights
The winner of four 2008 Tony awards, including Best Musical, In the Heights captures three very hot summer days in New York City through the rhythms of Latin music and the poetry of hip-hop. For the residents of 183rd Street in Washington Heights, a predominantly Hispanic neighborhood, change is in the air—for better or worse. Bodega owner Usnavi discovers that he’s sold a winning lottery ticket, and it’s not one of those scratch-off things. As the identity of its purchaser remains a mystery, the dreams of what the residents might do with that kind of money become clear: go to college, travel back to their home country, or simply make a better life for themselves. While the neighborhood residents muse on deferred dreams, secret loves and old prejudices bubble to the surface, and each person must decide what sacrifices they’re willing to make for their family, friends, and neighbors.
