Orphans, thieves, and undertakers all play a part in one of the first, and most successful, adaptations of a classic Charles Dickens’ novel. Oliver is an endearing urchin whose hope outstrips his circumstances in a dreary London workhouse. When the boy dares to ask for a second portion of gruel, his keepers Mr. Bumble and the Widow Corney send him packing (“Boy For Sale!”). A series of misadventures leads to his employ with the unscrupulous Fagin and his gang of underaged pickpockets (“You’ve Got to Pick a Pocket or Two”). Even in the lowest company, Oliver keeps his spirits high, and reminds Fagin, the Artful Dodger, and his other unfortunate compatriots that it’s never too late to do right.
First published 175 years ago, and first adapted for the stage in 1960, the original Broadway production earned nine Tony nominations and three wins, and a 1968 film version earned international acclaim. The stage-musical has undergone countless revivals since, and has been produced and re-produced on Broadway, the West End, and in community theaters all over the world.
