Penned by Tony-winning playwright Neil Simon to pay tribute to his time in the writing room of Sid Caesar’s Your Show of Shows, Laughter on the 23rd Floor follows a motley crew of jokesters as they squabble and bicker behind the scenes of a struggling variety program. Concerned with the show’s sinking ratings, Sid Caesar surrogate Max Prince struggles for creative control with the network suits, who fear his brand of comedy is too high-brow for the average viewer. The room’s writers, meanwhile, split their time between writing and slinging barbs at one another, with characters modeled on Mel Brooks, Carl Reiner, and Simon himself. Having staged nearly a dozen topflight shows a year for more than three decades, Park Square Theatre brings the production to life in an intimate auditorium that’s as friendly to the environment as Mother Nature’s grandma.
