The first work by young playwright Paul Downs Colaizzo, Really Really delves into the oft-sordid underbelly of Millennial ambition and hook-up culture. In the aftermath of a college blow-out, the social-climbing Leigh tries to piece together her night with the popular Davis—which may or may not have been consensual. Dissecting the vicious class and sexual politics of the school's achievement-obsessed students, the work shines a light on the darker aspects of modern youth. Helmed by acclaimed director David Cromer in its New York premiere, it received praise from the New York Times, which raved that the script "possesses an assured appreciation of the addictive power of ambiguity, which [Colaizzo] manipulates with a bait-and-switch mastery that never lets up."
Black Lab Theatre
Though Black Lab Theatre was only recently founded, it has already become a go-to source for newer, socially conscious dramas and dark comedies. Its six staff members use their expertise in acting, directing, and yelling "Scene!" in unison to mount both local and world premieres across stages throughout the city. These productions tackle everything from culture clashes to corporate greed and intergenerational bonding.
