  • The Big Texas Train Show
The Houston-Galveston area is train country. Multiple railroad-related museums call the community home, as do approximately 20 model railroad clubs. So, how does a person gain entry into this not-so-secret club of train enthusiasts? Simply walk into the Big Texas Train Show, where 100,000 square feet of convention space immerses visitors in a train-filled world. Here, various displays capture the train-enthusiast's imagination. Model trains?ranging from tiny Z scale locomotives to full-size garden trains?weave around meticulously constructed tracks. And vendors sell the supplies that people need to build their own routes at home, including the one secret ingredient needed to create steam. In addition, a wide variety of kid-friendly activities await little ones.

  • The Amazing Houston Comic Con
Comic-book heroes and villains leap from their pages in a dazzling display of color at the Amazing Houston Comic Con. Held at the George R. Brown Convention Center, the convention spans three days, a celebration of comics and video games in pop culture. Writers and artists responsible for the creation of X-Men and other Marvel and DC mainstays give panel discussions and mingle with celebrities as well as scores of costumed fans, stopping only to take naps under the sign-in tables. Nearly 60 exhibitors showcase their products in the main hall, while an international artist alley displays the sketches and inks of more than 100 artists. In the past, special guests have included Image Comics founder Rob Liefield, X-Men: Age of Apocalpyse writer Scott Lobdell, and Wolverine and Swamp Thing co-creator Len Wein. A dedicated Kids' Day teaches families how to safely fuse adamantium to their skeletons, while after-hours parties keep festivities going well into the night.
