Rumors

Ken and Chris Gorman are planning the 10-year wedding anniversary of their friends, Deputy Mayor Charlie Brock and his wife, Myra. But it seems like nothing is going right. The entire kitchen staff has disappeared, as has Myra. Also, Charlie has shot himself in the head. Not badly—just through the earlobe—but whatever happened, he’s passed out in the bedroom. Chris makes the wise choice of calling the Brocks’ doctor, although her husband less wisely advises her not to divulge any of the details. Who wants a scandal, anyway? Things only get worse from there: more guests are on the way, all of whom have a bad habit of gossiping. Add in an exhausted doctor and a visit from a police officer, and you’ve got the makings of a classic Neil Simon farce.

Sheldon Theatre of Performing Arts

At the turn of the 20th century, Red Wing businessman Theodore B. Sheldon decided that a portion of his estate should be bestowed on his home city for the public benefit. Four years later in 1904, the opulent T. B. Sheldon Memorial Auditorium opened its doors to the era’s traveling shows and Impressionist painters. Within thirty years, however, the stock market had crashed, the medium of film was growing, and the theater had to adapt. The Sheldon was converted into a cinema in 1936, and while it remained operational for the next few decades, its glory began to fade. Luckily, a group of concerned citizens stepped in, determined to return the venue to its original splendor. Today, the building has been fully restored to its 1904 design, although ghosts have been politely asked to leave.
