Check the schedule for showtimes. Student tickets are regularly $10 each, and Thursday performances are pay-what-you-can shows.
This year’s City Series at the Southern Rep explores the bittersweet side of self-transformation. In the one-woman show Shirley Valentine, a Liverpool housewife embarks on an unexpected trip to Greece after too many years of speaking to inanimate objects as an alternative to meaningful human contact. The play unfolds in two parts, the first in her kitchen before the trip, ending with a spur-of-the-moment note that reads “Gone to Greece back in two weeks.” In the second act, Shirley confesses to a rock on the beach, finding that discovering oneself may require more than an unplanned vacation. Witty and poignant, the play paints a complete picture of the middle-aged confusion of a full cast of characters—her husband, her best friend, and a certain charming Grecian—as filtered through Shirley on stage.
Based on the much-beloved story by Margery Williams, The Velveteen Rabbit resonates with audiences of all ages. A soft toy rabbit has only three desires: to love his Boy, to be loved by him, and to become real someday without being swallowed by a whale. Despite being mocked by fancier wind-up toys at first, the inanimate bunny gradually becomes his owner’s favorite, sleeping, playing, and adventuring with him nearly every day—until the Boy’s diagnosis of scarlet fever jeopardizes all his playthings.
Though Southern Rep sometimes features a discounted price, this deal still offers the best deal available for most customers.
