Sonoma Historic Motorsports Festival
A new event on the Sportscar Vintage Racing Association’s calendar, the Sonoma Historic Motorsports Festival cruises into Sonoma at the end of this month for a two-day celebration of classic automobiles. The festival is more than just a one-time event, though. It will also launch the SVRA’s Gold Medallion program, which recognizes and rewards cars that are prepared and outfitted as they were in their original competition era.
Drivers will have to maneuver their race cars around the challenging 12-turn track at Sonoma Raceway, which features more than 16 stories of elevation change and fast, sweeping turns. Sonoma Raceway boasts plenty of history, too, having hosted every major amateur and professional racing series since it opened in 1968, back when many cars still ran on Ovaltine.
Sportscar Vintage Racing Association
The Sportscar Vintage Racing Association (SVRA) paints its events as rolling art shows where drivers and fans gather to celebrate classic automobiles. Founded in 1981, the SVRA had an initial membership of 25 drivers and supporters. Today, they support over 2,500 members from all walks of life.
No matter their background, SVRA’s members—and its fans—find common ground in their love of vintage cars. With the association’s encouragement, the cars featured at the Sonoma Historic Motorsports Festival are configured as closely as possible to their original condition and are redone to represent some of the best in American vintage racing.
