The Gospel According to Broadway
Chapman Roberts has worked as special events musical director and supervisor for Presidents Carter and Obama, Harry Belafonte, Lena Horne, and Patti LaBelle. But the Tony- and Grammy-honored Broadway star is a legend in his own right, renowned for his work in Jesus Christ Superstar, The Fantasticks, and the original cast of Hair. He’s even recorded with B.B. King.
As a writer, however, he’s best known for The Gospel According to Broadway. This globally-touring show tells the Passion story by blending 300 years of African American sacred music with the moves and music of such Broadway works as Your Arms Too Short to Box with God. In 2007, the revue was recorded by the BBC Concert Orchestra, the Michael Terry Singers USA, and London Community Gospel Choirs, but today, it returns to its roots: America.
Roberts himself co-directs this production, joined by Mabel Robinson, who retired from her post as North Carolina Black Repertory Company’s long-term artistic director in January. Robinson uses her background as a dancer, choreographer, playwright, and director to craft meaningful moments on stage. Together, they’ll transport the audience on a trip through 50 states, 300 years, and one iconic boulevard.
