If the floorboards at Nan's School of Dance could talk, they would speak kindly of the tapping toes and pointed feet that have graced their surfaces for more than 40 years. In 1975, owner Nan Smith began teaching students in Yadkinville and later opened a dance studio in Greensboro in 1982. Twenty years later, Nan passed the torch and ancient family sweat towel to her oldest daughter, Jennifer Grinwis, who runs the studio with the same passion for teaching dance and instilling self-discipline, poise, and self-esteem.
Talented dance instructors lead students of all age levels in disciplines such as ballet, jazz, tap, and hip-hop. Patrons can also sign up to for a Kenpo karate classes with resident black belt Jamie Cummings or get hips swinging and calories spontaneously combusting with Zumba classes infused with Latin dance moves.
The mixologists at ABC Bartending School divulge saloon secrets during certification-based and recreational bartending classes. During two-week certification courses, burgeoning bartenders mix classic and popular drinks while learning about alcohol laws, responsible liquor service, and stocking and inventory. Alternatively, an entertaining mixology course lets amateurs shake up drinks and take cover from projectile champagne corks behind an ornate bar with mirrors and gold trim. Once finished imparting their knowledge, the instructors set students up with ABC’s job-placement program, which puts certified graduates to work everywhere from restaurants and nightclubs to the zero-G sports bar where astronauts celebrate successful trips to the moon.
The work of Tracey J. Marshall is vibrant and colorful, just like her personality. As art teacher for Art by TJM, the qualities she shares with her work make her shine. She mentors art students in group and private classes as they learn to wield oils and acrylics to manifest the masterpiece that previously only existed in their dreams or on their fingernails. Tracey also leads Ladies' Nights Out, where guests fuel the revelry by BYOBing. Meanwhile, kids aged 2 or older explore different art stations during parent and child classes.
The Professional Bartending Institute sets aspiring bartenders apart from the pack with in-depth courses that cover all aspects of the job. Certified bartenders helm hands-on workshops in a simulated-bar atmosphere, honing students’ speed and organizational skills while teaching them to mix cocktails, comply with state alcohol laws, and provide customer service that goes beyond sticking their hand in drinks to ensure they’re wet. Once students have completed their training and obtained their bartending certificates, the center’s job placement experts help place them in bar settings that suit their credentials and personalities.
