The Secret Garden
In this adaptation of Frances Hodgson Burnett’s beloved children’s story, 11-year-old Mary Lennox, petulant and spoiled, finds herself living at her reclusive uncle’s Yorkshire mansion after her parents fall victim to a cholera epidemic. Forced to fend for herself, she first dislikes her new circumstances and remains cranky and unappreciative. Then, after forging a friendship with the maid and the maid’s younger brother, Dickon, Mary learns of her late aunt’s private garden. The maid tells Mary that when her aunt died, her uncle locked the garden away and buried the key. But through a chance exploration of a badger hole, Mary discovers the key and keeps the garden a secret between herself and Dickon. As the garden—and her newfound friendships—begins to chip away at Mary’s hard personality, it also presents the answer to the manor’s even more closely guarded secret: the cries that haunt her every night.
