Joy and her mother George have always been close. But as George’s health deteriorates due to cancer and dementia, the tight-knit pair fight to connect. With the help of George’s hospice nurse, Joy begins to deal with the loss at hand while cherishing the moments she has with her mother.
Written by Jennifer Blackmer, the world premiere of Unraveled delves headfirst into the grief of loss and the catharsis of letting go. Directed by Mary Cutler and starring a cast that includes Jamila Anderson and Eli Coats, the play highlights life just as much as it addresses death. Guests are encouraged to donate yarn that will be knitted into hats for chemotherapy patients, while Sunday matinee shows feature a post-show knitting circle and demonstration.
Theatre Unbound has a solution to the lack of women writing and directing theatrical plays: give them opportunities to create at a theater company made exclusively for that purpose. Founded in 1999, Theatre Unbound has already shattered the dismal record—18%—of women writing and directing American theatre. Since its inception, the company has produced the work of 137 female directors and 126 female playwrights, some of whom came through a portal from the 10th century to stage their work.
