The Issue: Raising Awareness of City Bicycling Opportunities
Bicycling reduces humans' impact on the environment, fosters healthy hearts, and can positively affect the economy. According to sources collected by the League of American Bicyclists, roughly 70 percent of adults in the United States are sedentary, leading to a rise in obesity and health-care spending. Although Madison maintains a roughly 200-mile network of bicycle paths and lanes, many residents remain unaware of efficient routes or safe bicycling practices.
The Campaign: Neighborhood Bike Ride and Safety Class
If this Grassroots campaign raises $300, then the Bicycle Federation of Wisconsin can host a neighborhood bike ride and safety-education class for two Madison neighborhoods. Alongside community members, Madison city alders and the bicycle unit of the Madison Police Department will participate in an easy 3- to 5-mile ride to popular neighborhood destinations. A neighborhood ride captain will plan the route and incorporate lessons from the Bike Fed.'s Share & Be Aware campaign into a brief safety lesson. Each additional $300 raised will be used to bring a bike ride and safety class to another neighborhood.
To celebrate the launch of Groupon Grassroots, Groupon will provide a $1,000 kickoff grant to this campaign.
Bicycle Federation of Wisconsin
The Bicycle Federation of Wisconsin strives to ensure bicycling is safe, accessible, and fun for residents across the state to achieve its vision of making Wisconsin one of the world’s best places to ride. Along with supporting campaigns such as Bike to Work Week and youth bike camps, the federation works to create bicycle-friendly policies that support riding opportunities throughout Wisconsin, reduce air pollution, and lessen traffic congestion. At neighborhood bike rides and safety presentations, city alders, community members, and police officers are invited to participate and learn about cycling options in their neighborhoods.
