According to data from the National Coalition for Homeless Veterans, 1.5 million veterans are at high risk of homelessness due to poverty and lack of support networks, and more than 67,000 veterans are homeless on any given night. Founded by a group of Shaler Area High School students, Youth Advocacy League (YAL) works for social justice through community development, student mediations, conflict resolution, and mentoring.
YAL’s Seeds of Hope project creates local community gardens to help support overseas American troops and their families. Volunteers sell half of the gardens’ crops locally and donate the profits to Veterans Affairs. The remaining crops are distributed to families of deployed soldiers. In order to expand the gardens in one central location, Seeds of Hope needs additional funding for materials to build five more raised beds, including nontreated wood, soil, fertilizer, seeds, and fences.
Join G-Team and donate $10 to help Youth Advocacy League expand its community gardens to support soldiers. If G-Team members raise $500, then the Seeds of Hope project can build five raised garden beds. Each additional donation will go toward funding fencing and signs for the garden.
Unlike traditional Groupon deals, G-Team campaigns typically don't offer you a "discount" or "savings." Seeds of Hope
As part of its efforts to raise awareness about the difficulties veterans face upon returning home, Seeds of Hope, a project of the Youth Advocacy League, creates community gardens to help support veterans and their families. Youth groups such as Girl Scouts work with veterans to plant and maintain the gardens. This partnership helps show appreciation for veterans while also providing powerful learning experiences for children and teens. The organization’s efforts caught the attention of TribLive after the group was honored in the Jefferson Awards for Public Service Youth Service Challenge.
