Kellogg Bird Sanctuary
Established by cereal tycoon (and environmentalist) W.K. Kellogg in 1927 as a haven for the Canada goose, the Kellogg Bird Sanctuary sits at the intersection of three major migration routes. What began as a home for natural wildlife, journeying waterfowl, and other birds and beasts, has grown to be a world-renowned center known for its contributions to ecological science and evolutionary biology. However, the sanctuary is still a home for birds—lots of them. Amidst the lush scenery on the banks of Lake Wintergreen, visitors can spy hundreds of waterfowl, including trumpeter swans. And a birds-of-prey enclosure houses a bald eagle, an eastern screech owl, and other slightly fearsome fliers.
