A Chat with Kishindo Martial Arts Academy
What services does your business offer and what makes your business stand out from the competition?
At Kishindo Martial Arts, we do Karate differently. We don't do it to make money, we do it to change lives. We do free women's safety classes. We never try and sell you stuff. Everything is included. When you achieve your first rank (testing is free), you are awarded, your uniform and belt.
Is your location strictly for adults, or can kids participate as well?
Yes. We only teach ages 8 and up. We believe we should not teach martial skills to those who aren't ready to use it properly, rather, we suggest that parents enroll children in gymnastics or tumbling programs where the kids can develop and learn how their bodies move and work.
What was the inspiration to start or run this business?
Kishindo changed my life. When I was 14, I started Kishindo as a student. It taught me to focus and to apply what I learned to all aspects of my life. I received my black belt in 1994, and have been teaching ever since. I want to provide a similar environment for others as the one I had.
What do you love most about your job?
Kishindo means the way of the joining of the Spirit and Energy of the Mind and the Body. I love to see people embrace that life philosophy. We train in the gym so we can be great outside of the gym.
