The Milan Museum

At one time, the port of Milan was hopping. In the early nineteenth century, it was full of shipping boats and cargo crafts making their way down the canal. The Milan Museum celebrates this era in its town history, when the port was thriving and future inventor Thomas Alva Edison was born at a local address now known as 9 Edison Drive.

  • Size: The museum is actually a collection of seven buildings, each of which celebrates a different aspect of the town's history.

  • Centerpiece: In the Galpin Galleries, one gallery tells the story of the town and how much it once relied on the canal; other galleries display folk and glass art.

  • Throwback: In the Sayles Victorian Home, visitors can explore a family's parlor and playroom, all decorated in period style. The general store's shelves are stocked as they were in the town's heyday.

  • Annual Events: During the holiday season, families gather for a gingerbread house workshop. In the fall, grown-ups sample local microbrews at the Annual Beer Tasting.

  • While You’re in the Neighborhood: Visit Thomas Edison's Birthplace Museum, filled with early inventions and personal mementoes.

"Several Interesting Buildings"
We happened onto this by accident, but were glad we went. There were several buildings and mostly self-guided. There were volunteers to answer questions, if needed.
