Safety Inspection

Annual Virginia State Inspection. Virginia's Official Motor Vehicle Inspection Program was developed and adopted to promote highway safety. The program model is based on the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards. Vehicles submitted for inspection must be compliant with Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards applicable on the date of manufacture. The goal of the Official Motor Vehicle Inspection Program is to assure all Virginia registered vehicles are mechanically safe to operate over the highways of the Commonwealth.

Emission Inspection

Emission inspections are required every two years for certain vehicles registered or operated primarily in Northern Virginia, including the counties of Arlington, Fairfax, Loudoun, Prince William and Stafford, and the cities of Alexandria, Fairfax, Falls Church, Manassas and Manassas Park. Vehicles must receive a passing emission inspection or receive a waiver in order to register or renew registration with the Virginia Department of Motor Vehicles.
