A Chat with Open Hand Martial Arts
What services does your business offer and what makes your business stand out from the competition?
Unlike other studios, OHMA focuses more on instruction than competition. The "open hand" refers to the way we bow, which symbolizes an offering of kindness. We teach self-defense while striving for maturity, insight, and peace within ourselves.
What's one tip for first-time students that will make them feel like veterans?
Relax. Have fun. Be imaginative. Explore your capabilities. Expect to surprise yourself.
What was the inspiration to start or run this business?
I have worked with children in many different capacities (educator, tutor, stage manager), but martial arts has always been my favorite subject to teach. I took the style I was trained in and arranged it to make it more accessible to kids and teens, so that all ages could benefit from it.
What do you love most about your job?
Martial arts is difficult, and every class is about trying something you're not good at (because you've just learned it). What I love most is helping students see, from class to class, just how much better they're getting, and thus help them feel better about themselves.
