Each hands-on class is taught in a space that mimics the exciting conditions of a real bar. The one-day class, offered Fridays from 6pm—9pm, introduces students to mixology, the difference between liquors and liqueurs, using bar equipment, and how to create popular and customized drinks. The two-day class, which occurs from 10am—3pm over a Saturday and Sunday, goes further and delves into what life is like behind the bar; free-pouring, flavor profiles, liquor infusion, and the creation of simple syrup are some of the topics covered. The two-day offering also Includes a 12-bottle bar book, which contains over 200 recipes, and instruction on the basic skills needed to mix drinks at home or a private party.
The Professional Bartending Academy
Whether training students to helm the bar at a nightclub or just to wow guests at a private party, the experienced staff instructors at The Professional Bartending Academy champion the benefits of hands-on learning.
In semi-monthly classes, they walk groups of no more than 12 students through an overview of Virginia alcohol laws and mixology techniques. Various mixing exercises teach the methods for making classic and trendy cocktails. All classes are held at a fully functional training bar, which lends a realistic atmosphere to the training. That realistic environment, as well as the school's certification by the State Council of Higher Education for Virginia, helps students feel prepared to find work as bartenders. So does post-class job-placement assistance, and the center helped more than 70% of graduates find jobs in 2012.
