A Chat with Shudo Kan Karate Club
What services does your business offer and what makes your business stand out from the competition?
We study Shito-Ryu karate, one of the four original karate forms from Okinawa, Japan. We have been teaching traditional karate, fitness, and self-defense for 41 years in Springfield, Illinois. Karate brings confidence to the introverts, and focus to those with high energy. We make learning karate fun.
Exercise is challenging. How do you keep clients motivated and engaged?
We do not teach karate out of a book or guide. We do have standards from the World Shito-Ryu Karate Do Federation we have to meet, but we include self-defense that works. We attend tournaments, locally, statewide, and nationally governed by the United States National Karate Do Federation.
What was the inspiration to start or run this business?
Karate is great for: fitness, goal setting, teamwork, coordination, self-control, self-respect, self-esteem, self-discipline … individual development, listening skills, positive influence, nonviolent conflict resolution, and self-defense.
What do you love most about your job?
There is that ah-ha moment when someone finally gets it. There is that moment when the student finally looks you in [the] eyes, and you can see the newfound confidence. There is that moment when that student goes to state and realizes that their karate works as they look at the medal they just won.
