The Issue: Music Education Benefits Developing Brains
Low-income students who are engaged in the arts are more likely than their non-arts-engaged peers to succeed in college and the workforce and to volunteer in their communities, according to studies assessed by the President’s Committee on the Arts and the Humanities. School music programs benefit students on multiple levels, encouraging teamwork and classroom participation while improving memory, sensory integration, and critical-thinking skills.

The Campaign: Providing New Pianos to Public School Music Programs
All donations to this Grassroots campaign will be used by VH1 Save The Music Foundation to bolster music programs in public schools across the country. For every $10,000 raised, VH1 Save The Music Foundation can donate a new Yamaha NU1 upright hybrid piano and accompanying sound system to a struggling music program as part of the Keys + Kids Piano Program. In 2014, this grant will be awarded to up to 20 qualifying schools as part of a larger effort to replace deteriorating pianos, which are a central feature of most music, theater, and dance programs. All K–12 schools with music teachers on staff and scheduled music classes can apply for the competitive grant to qualify for the new instruments.

VH1 Save The Music Foundation
As music education declines in schools across the country in response to shrinking budgets, the VH1 Save The Music Foundation fights to keep music in kids' lives by bolstering these programs and raising awareness about the benefits of arts education. The organization equips qualifying schools with the tools necessary to establish a sustainable instrumental-music program, such as a set of band or string instruments, a keyboard or guitar lab, or even a mariachi ensemble. Since its inception, VH1 Save The Music has provided new musical instruments to more than 1,900 public schools in more than 192 school districts across the country, improving academic performance, community pride, and self-esteem for 2.3 million kids.
