A lot of the classes we take in high school, or even college, don’t prepare us that well for real world adulting. Basic life skills like personal finance, cooking and mindfulness aren’t typically found on standard syllabuses (but should be!). So if you’re looking to get more organized in your adult life and feel a bit more responsible (honestly, you can only do so much), check out this list of classes that’ll give you life skills to build on for years to come.

Sign Language

You probably don’t realize it, but throughout the day, you use thousands of silent gestures — from the simple “shhh” with a finger raised to our lips to a playful “chef’s kiss” when the food is divine. All of these simple gestures count as a basic form of signing. Why not take it a step further and learn American Sign Language (ASL)? Learning a second language, like ASL, has been shown to stimulate thinking and improve concentration. On top of that, learning ASL makes you more accessible to people with different abilities. Check out our collection of online and in person classes near you!

Mindfulness

We live in a multitasking word. We cook dinner while keeping one eye on the kids and the other eye on a social media feed. We listen to podcasts while we shampoo, and juggle coffee and breakfast on our drive to the office. But in the rush to get it all done, we lose our connection to the moment. Developing a mindfulness practice can give you life skills that not only focus your attention on what you’re doing, but also how you’re feeling. And all of that goes a long way towards helping you savor life’s smaller pleasures — the beauty of trees in bloom or the particular warms of a cup of coffee.

Interior Design

It’s a fact: the spaces we inhabit have a huge effect on our mental and physical health. Just think of how draining it feels working under the buzzing florescent lights of the average office. Or how lovely it feels waking up with the morning light peeking through crisp linen curtains. But knowing how to create a space that reflects who you are on the inside is a delicate art, and it’s tempting to just phone it in. But before you add another “Live Laugh Love” sign or decorative ampersand to you cart, ask yourself, “Is this really me?” Then go check out these classes on how to make your space a true reflection of you.

Gun Safety

First, let me start by saying that, hunting notwithstanding, I am not a fan of guns. But I live in a country that loves ’em, and the sad reality is many gun accidents (and deaths) could have been avoided if basic firearm safety had been observed. Knowing what to do when you come across a gun and how to handle one safely are life skills everyone should know, no matter which side of the gun debate you fall on. Be ready with knowledge and check out these classes on gun safety and firearms training.

Learn the ins and outs of mixing drinks with speed and precision, develop knowledge of different spirits, and gain real-world insight into what it takes to run and maintain your own bar at a professional level.

Cooking

I’ll let you in on a secret: cooking isn’t hard. But there’s an entire industry built around “elevated dining” and as a result, many people feel like creating delicious meals on their own is beyond their reach. To that I say, “Pffff!” Picking up a cooking class or two can give you the confidence (and know how) to start whipping up tasty meals on your own. Need a little extra incentive? Studies have shown that people who cook their own meals from scratch eat healthier than those who rely on boxed or canned meals. Ever heard of Bigfoot or the Mothman? These are just two of the many creatures that fall under the umbrella of cryptozoology. You many be asking yourself, “Why would I want to earn an online diploma in this field?” And to you I say, “Please stop reading this entry and skip to #10.” For the rest of you, this is your chance to learn more about all kinds of fantastical creatures and hear debates on why they may or may not exist. Still not convinced? I signed up for this online course and so far I’m thoroughly engaged.
