Tequila is "much more than that aggressive hard shot," Ay Chiwowa owner Arturo Gomez once told USA Today. He continued: "People are now paying premium prices for these spirits, drinking them over the rocks and neat." He should know. His eatery is just as much a tequileria as a taqueria (it's other claim to fame), serving more than 100 tequilas at the bar and fresh margaritas on tap. Diners can sample multiple styles in a flight or order a tequila-based cocktail such as the Batanga with Cazadores Blanco, lime juice, Mexican cola, and a salted rim.
Then there's the food. The recently revamped menu from Michelin-rated chef Kevin Hickey starts off on a daring note, pairing crunchy pork rinds with sauce made from infamously hot ghost chilies. From there, patrons can dig into several contemporary Mexican dishes, such as sweet corn elotes and mushroom quesadillas. But tacos remain the specialty, filled with creative stuffings like tortilla-crusted cod and bacon al pastor, the latter of which is so sacred to foodies, it can't be said out loud.
