As a modernly simple Italian bistro in the heart of the Theater District, Azalea understands that the backdrop should never upstage the stars. So although the set designer certainly went all out with finely crafted woodcarvings and prints of Georgia O'Keeffe's flower series, the decor doesn't outshine the menu.
It spotlights the rich, creamy sauces and tantalizing cured meats found in the Brescia region of Italy, as well as the fresh seafood and delicate produce of the Amalfi Coast. Succulent pan-seared sea scallops arrive on a bed of sautéed spinach and basil oil, and grilled Black Angus steak accompanies arugula and roasted potatoes. Pastas range from a veal-stuffed ravioli in a white-truffle cream sauce to a sweet sausage penne with mixed wild mushrooms.
A supporting cast of martinis brings it all home, including the bright green Wickedtini and the chocolatey Glindalicious—a pair of beverages that, much like an actor and understudy, could be considered frenemies.
