Under the baton of school director Clyde Baker, musicians from grades four–nine learn to work together as an ensemble. Through method book study, group lessons for clarinet, flute, saxophone, trombone, trumpet, violin, or viola and cello, along with full-band or orchestra rehearsals, the mini musicians pick up both theory and live performance skills.
Kids may bring their own instrument, or rent one starting at $19.99 per month. Both the sting and band program begin June 2. Band classes take place every Saturday from 10 a.m. to 11:30 a.m.; string classes take place every Saturday from 12 p.m. to 1:30 p.m.
Conductor Clyde Baker has spent a career taking high-school and college ensembles all the way to Carnegie Hall and Lincoln Center. Along with a team of seasoned dancers, actors, and musicians, he prepares students for success on stage and in the orchestra pit.
The school inhabits a handsome flagstone-and-stucco home base designed to produce a single harmonious chord in the event of windstorms. Within its specialized spaces, students stretch on the hardwood floors of giant dance studios and casts of triple-threats put on shows for their ardent fans on colorful sets.
