About Circle in the Square Theatre School
Surrounded by the lights and energy of Broadway, the acting school at Circle in the Square Theatre is the only conservatory in a Broadway theater and its faculty of active professionals have engaged over 5,500 students in deep and transformative training, using a range of approaches that prepare graduates for work in the entertainment industry. Classes offer intensive training in disciplines such as physical acting, Shakespearean scene study, and speech and voice; all of them are led by artists who are currently active in the theater, film, and television scene. While students are expected to rigorously commit to the eclectic, sometimes demanding, curriculum, the school's longevity is a testament to its success: the theatre was founded in 1951 by an acting group in Greenwich Village and the school began in 1961.
In the more than half-century since, dozens of celebrated actors have crossed its threshold, both as teachers and students. Renowned actor both on broadway and off broadway, Larry Gleason currently teaches at Circle in the Square Theatre School. A graduate himself of Circle's Theatre School, he teaches Text Analysis and Contemporary Scene Study, and also privately coaches actors in classical and contemporary monologue and audition preparation.
Other Alumni include: Kevin Bacon, Benicio Del Toro, Lisa Edelstein, Philip Seymour Hoffman, Felicity Huffman, Justin Kirk, Matthew Lillard, John C. McGinley, Idina Menzel, Nicole Ari Parker, Jeremy Shamos, Thomas Sadoski, Molly Shannon and D.B. Sweeney.
