About City Winery
Michael Dorf stood smiling over the barrel filled with wine from grapes he'd just crushed, fermented, and pressed. The entrepreneur claims that despite tastings and classes, he'd never begun to understand wine until this moment. As his understanding grew, he laid the foundations for the City Winery concept—a winery, restaurant, and concert venue all in one facility—that would eventually reach Nashville. Here, there are always 14 wines on tap. The eco-friendly setup draws ultra-local, fermented-in-house wine from stainless-steel kegs, eschewing the need for bottles, corks, and labels.
These monolithic tanks and barrels can be seen through floor-to-ceiling windows from many of the tables, to which servers ferry Executive Chef Kristin Beringson's dishes, which meld Mediterranean and southern influences while keeping wine pairings in mind. City Winery's vast open space also plays host to concerts, mostly featuring singer-songwriters. Considering found Michael Dorf also started the Knitting Factory label and venue, it's not surprising that such high-profile artists as Macy Gray and Howie Day have appeared there.
