In this 8 session open level wax working class, you will learn to complete a set of designs utilizing different wax carving and forming techniques. You will start with carving waxes and learn subtractive sculpting methods by using files, burs and carving tools. You will also learn how to work additively with soft waxes like wire and sheet wax by utilizing wax pens and other modeling tools. Alternative approaches to surface embellishment, casting clean-up, and production considerations will also be covered.

This course is open to beginning students as well as those who want to elevate their level of proficiency and strengthen their jewelry making skills. Introductory techniques will be taught and more advanced processes will be elaborated, with a focus on methods and techniques to develop your designs. Plenty of variations will be given to accommodate all levels.

Q: Can I make up a class if I miss one?
A: 
Yes. Students who are absent for class are allowed to make up missed class time during open studio hours at no cost. This is an unsupervised working time. Teachers are not required to meet with students outside of class to make up missed information. Students may make up missed hours up to 2 weeks after their class ends. One missed class equals 3 hours.

Q: Is a certificate of completion available to me after completing their class?

A: No

Materials you need to bring to class:

  • Purple Wax Ring tube (flat top, large size) 
  • Pink Sheet Wax 16 - 26 gauge assorted sizes
  • Spiral Wax Saw Blades (pack of 12)
  • Double end wax file 8" (Grobet)
  • Needle files set of 6 – 2 cut, economy
  • Wax pen low temp. (battery operated) 
  • Burs: round: 1, 3 & 5 mm 
  • Split mandrel 
  • Stainless steel wax carving tools set of 6, economy
  • Metal Saw blades 2/0 (pack of 12)
  • X - acto or lightweight knife (Round handle)
  • 6” steel ruler
  • Tooth brush – for cleaning wax files 
  • 320 sand paper (2 sheets)
Metal casting for this class is outsourced and will be the responsibility of the student.

Q: Is there anything else I should be aware of to be prepared for class?
A: Yes. The school requires closed toe shoes and appropriate work clothing made from natural fibers. Long hair must be tied back when working in the studio. They provide safety glasses but you are encouraged to bring your own if you have them.
