Pennsylvania's Pocono Mountains: Hiking, Trout Fishing, and Historical Towns

The Poconos region of northeastern Pennsylvania accounts for some 2,400 square miles of mountains, lakes, waterfalls, and forests. The area has been a popular vacation destination ever since Pennsylvania Quakers opened a hotel here on the Delaware River in 1829. Today, the Poconos draw more than 25 million annual visitors, thanks to year-round recreational opportunities and stunning natural scenery.

The warmer months are a great time to explore the region’s lakes and wooded hills. For spectacular hikes, check out Delaware Water Gap National Recreation Area, where you can trek to dramatic waterfalls or follow a 27-mile section of the historic Appalachian Trail. A handful of little towns full of antique shops and galleries nestle in the mountains, too. You'll find boutique wine galleries and historical mansions tucked away on country roads, including the late 19th-century Asa Packer Mansion, which is open for tours, in the borough of Jim Thorpe.

DISAPPOINTED STAY!!! NOT AUTISM-FRIENDLY! FRONT DESK IS HORRIBLE! We recently had a very disappointing experience at Camelback Resort, largely due to issues with the front desk and room conditions. Despite arriving on-site at 3:00 PM (the stated check-in time), we did not receive access to our room until 6:30 PM — after speaking with front desk staff no less than five times. We were traveling with a child who has disabilities, and we were deeply disheartened by the lack of empathy or urgency shown by the staff regarding our situation. When we finally entered the room, it was in unacceptable condition. There were bugs present, the screen door was broken — posing a safety risk to our children — and the couch was filthy and broken. Additionally, the flooring was stained and did not appear to have been properly cleaned. The water park itself was enjoyable, and our family had fun once we were able to settle in. However, even there we encountered issues: both the men’s and women’s restrooms had no working lights, creating a very unsettling and unsafe environment. My child had to find a Camelback employee for help, and many guests had to use phone flashlights to change clothes. The front desk experience was the most frustrating part of our stay. We found it particularly disappointing that the staff showed no understanding or accommodation for our autistic child. The customer service we received from Xavier (the front desk supervisor) and another front desk staff member (who refused to wear a name tag) was unacceptable. After multiple requests, Xavier finally presented his name tag from his pocket, which speaks volumes about the lack of transparency and professionalism. That said, we want to commend Anthony, the bell person, for his outstanding attitude and service. He went above and beyond to make us feel welcome and supported — something the front desk staff could learn from. We also appreciated the friendly demeanor of the safety officer, Chris Jones, who consistently greeted guests with a smile. Ultimately, this was the worst experience we’ve had at Camelback, despite being repeat visitors who usually book two-bedroom or loft suites. Moving forward, we will only consider day visits, as the overnight experience left much to be desired. Camelback Resort urgently needs to improve its front desk operations, staff training, and overall cleanliness if it hopes to provide the level of hospitality guests expect. Date of stay: July 2025

Customer Service Excellence The check in area at Camelback works like a well oiled machine. Wait times are a minimal: Roselyn is triaging guests as they arrive. Her wam greetings made me want to violate her personal space and hug her. I was attended by Wanda and I was taken back at her smile and service. We had a few extra questions and a woman, Ms. Lala jumped right in. I noticed how attentive she was to our questions and her smile and confidence at that front desk was nothing I’ve seen before. She excepted patience, dominance and humility. Ms. Lala goes down as the best Customer Service Manager I’ve come across. Her front desk operations are impeccable. Perhaps the surrounding competitors should take a look at what Service Excellence looks like. I salute you, Ms. Lala. Blowing you a big kiss. Thank you for a wonderful time at your resort. Terrible Experience – Will Never Return! I was supposed to check in at 4:00 PM, but I didn’t get my room until 7:00 PM. Terrible Experience – Will Never Return! I was supposed to check in at 4:00 PM, but I didn’t get my room until 7:00 PM. Meanwhile, everyone else got their rooms on time. I waited with my kids who were crying because we lost the whole afternoon — no time to enjoy the waterpark or even have dinner. I paid $280 for this nightmare of a stay. The management was completely unprofessional and did not care about our situation at all. This was the worst experience I have ever had at any resort. I DO NOT recommend staying here, and I will never book this place again. If they want to keep customers, they better fix their terrible service and start respecting their guests! — Sara Fahmi, Room 368, June 29, 2025
