DJs often begin as avid record collectors, much as orchestra conductors often start out as people who just have a ton of French horns lying around. Crowds spin into a single, undulating wave of movement of as a trio of international DJs weaves hypnotic dance anthems out of catchy vocals, dizzying, low-tempo beats, and acoustic slaps. As part of their Group Therapy 2012 Tour, Above & Beyond's three-piece DJ outfit makes this scene a reality while dishing out their signature vocal trance that has eaten up dance floors in clubs and festivals across the globe. Tracks such as the emotionally resonant "Alone Tonight," from the album Tri-State, reflect the group's lyrical focus. As member Paavo Siljamaki emphasizes, "We like to think of ourselves as songwriters first."
Before Above and Beyond set up, the German duo Cosmic Gate flood the crowd with a wealth of material compiled over 11 years. The pair plays with tempos in the moody "Not Enough Time" before launching a series of sonic jabs in "Fire Wire," an aggressive track with a video set in an apocalyptic near-future where dancers reign supreme and the economy again revolves around parachute pants. The night's first act is British trancer Mat Zo, an up-and-comer to the EDM scene on Above and Beyond's Anjunabeats label.
