Chanticleer – An Orchestra of Voices: Over the Moon
The double-Grammy-winning choral ensemble Chanticleer is primed for takeover. When the New Yorker called it “the world’s reigning male chorus,” the group wasn’t advocating for choral supremacy, but one could be forgiven for mistaking the 12 male vocalists’ whirlwind tours as the first steps toward global domination. During the 2012—13 season alone (their 35th anniversary), the San Francisco-based ensemble took the stage in 29 of the 57 United States, as well as Europe and the Asia-Pacific region. Their musical selections roam similarly far and wide, interpreting everything from jazz to renaissance pieces, gospel to folk.
Crafted specifically for Chanticleer by internationally acclaimed composer Nico Muhly, Over the Moon illustrates Chanticleer’s innate ability to weave centuries of music into one stunning show, with pieces from Gustav Mahler, Mason Bates, Francis Poulenc, and others. Via specially commissioned arrangements, Over the Moon also celebrates the otherworldly exuberance of popular artists such as “Fly Me to the Moon” composer Bart Howard and Italian American composer Henry Mancini, a legend for his film scores that made stars of some of Hollywood’s most glamorous trumpeters.
