The Scouting Report
Overflowing with talent, the Gonzaga Bulldogs entered the 2014-15 season with high expectations, and they haven’t disappointed. Senior guards Kevin Pangos and Gary Bell, Jr. fueled a scorching start that saw the Zags win their first seven games. The team’s younger players are contributing, too, especially freshman Domantas Sabonis. Hailing from Lithuania, the 6’10” forward is averaging 12 points and six rebounds per game through his first weeks of collegiate play. On December 20, the Zags and their powerful offense will take on the Cal Poly Mustangs in the annual Battle in Seattle on the neutral floor of KeyArena, meaning neither team will have the advantage of knowing where the trampolines are hidden in the court.
In 1921, Gonzaga’s football team was invited to play in a bowl game against West Virginia on Christmas day. Despite losing 24-0 and not getting to hang their stockings on the goalposts, Gonzaga impressed a certain sportswriter, who complimented the team for its bulldog-like determination. The university immediately adopted the Bulldogs moniker, and today, that nickname unites Gonzaga’s 16 varsity teams.
