That’s the funny thing about life-changing moments—they might not seem so life-changing at the time. Maybe taking a walk in the park means meeting the love of your life. Maybe calling an old friend means starting a whole new career. Or maybe the difference is as simple as what name you’d like to be called. For Elizabeth Vaughan, that exact choice proves to be the turning point between two very different lives in the musical If/Then. After her divorce, Elizabeth moves to New York City for a fresh start. There, she meets kindergarten teacher Kate, who suggests she adopt the nickname “Liz,” and reconnects with her old friend Lucas, who prefers “Beth.” The musical then splits to follow Liz as she takes Kate’s suggestion to pursue new experiences, and Beth as she listens to Lucas and develops her professional relationships. Exploring the way small decisions add up to major consequences and questioning the nature of fate and destiny, If/Then speaks to anyone who has ever wondered “what if?”
Back in the lead role is Jackie Burns, who’s no stranger to Broadway—she’s also appeared in Wicked and Hair. And she’s not the only familiar face on stage. Rent star—and Joliet native—Anthony Rapp infuses the character of Lucas with signature strength and sensitivity, and Tamyra Gray portrays Kate with the depth of emotion she brought to Rent and the first season of American Idol. Matthew Hydzik co-stars. Off-stage are Tom Kitt and Brian Yorkey, whose previous collaboration, Next to Normal, took home three Tonys, one Pulitzer, and more than a million individual claps. Rounding out the creative side of the team is director Michael Greif, who worked with both Menzel and Rapp in the original run of Rent, and directed Kitt and Yorkey’s Next to Normal.
