Jack and the Beanstalk
Magic beans are surely better than money. At least, that’s what Jack thinks when an old man hoodwinks him out of the family cow, offering him the legumes for payment. When Jack returns home, his mother is so mad she throws the paltry payment out the window. What happens next is as dazzling to young children as it is familiar to parents—a beanstalk reaches up into the clouds, where giants live and a princess is being held captive.
In the Centerstage! Theatre production, writer Paul Hendy puts his own spin on the classic tale by turning into a musical comedy. This new version nods to the traditional English panto, or pantomime, and entertains onlookers of all ages with slapstick humor, elaborate costumes, and audience interaction.
Centerstage! Theatre is one of Puget Sound's longest-lived theatre companies, with a mission of bringing a variety of popular shows to the region. Decades after they were founded, their artistic ensemble keeps that mission in mind while staging a repertoire of new works. Family-friendly shows such as Shipwrecked!, powerfully-emotional productions including For All That, and tinsel-coated traditional English Christmas pantomimes take the boards at the intimate Knutzen Family Theater. That focus on feel-good entertainment has won Centerstage audiences and acclaim—several shows have proven popular enough to be transported to bigger venues such as Seattle's ACT Theatre and Tacoma's Broadway Center. And Centerstage has also been nominated for and received many awards, including Best Actress, Best Director and Best New Play.
